Staff from the Health Department provide a variety of oral health services to children through school-based programs, including oral health screenings, dental sealants and fluoride varnish.

During the 2018-2019 school year, the Oral Health Program did more than 2,000 oral health assessments for Northern Kentucky children. Staff also provided more than 1,200 cleanings, applied fluoride varnish almost 2,000 times, and placed more than 2,000 dental sealants.

Dental prevention program

Schools with at least 50 percent of their students on free or reduced lunch qualify for this program. After conducting an assessment, Health Department staff can place protective dental sealants on the molars of children that show a need, provide dental cleanings, and apply fluoride to strengthen the teeth.

If tooth decay is found, students are referred to a local dentist for follow up.

Fluoride varnish program

Fluoride treatments are used to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities. The Health Department provides fluoride varnish to Northern Kentucky children up to age 6 through the county health centers, or through partnerships with area Head Start facilities, elementary and preschools, and community early learning centers.
