Building a Healthier You

Your individual health is part of our effort to improve public health. From the kitchen to the gym, we offer ways to build a healthier YOU.

Medical Nutrition Therapy

Many people think good health comes as a result of exercise. That’s just part of it. Eating well (and eating the right foods) also plays a key role in good health. Our dietitians can help you learn how to find the path to better health in the kitchen through nutrition assessments, counseling, and education.

Working with a dietitian is included as part of many Health Department programs, although patients presenting a physician’s referral may receive special diet counseling by our dietitian.

Educational programs on nutrition are available to schools and community groups.

Individual counseling is available at the county health centers. For more information, call 859-363-2112.

Get Physical

The Health Department works with LiveWell NKY in its movement toward generating avenues for better health. LiveWell NKY is a movement of community-wide initiatives that promotes better health through initiatives such as the establishment of walking/running paths, yoga classes, exercise classes, Silver Sneaker classes for senior citizens, and other physical activity opportunities.

Let us help you shed a few pounds

NKY Health offers monthly, free support group sessions for weight management led by a registered dietitian. This is not a diet program. The OFF Support Sessions are for adults who would like monthly ongoing support for changing lifestyle habits.

Learn how to lose and manage your weight through long-term lifestyle changes of healthy eating habits, food choices, and regular exercise. The support group sessions are also appropriate for people with diabetes. Come as needed for accountability, support, motivation, education, and for community by connecting with others on the same journey!

The monthly OFF Support Sessions are held one Monday evening per month at 6:00 p.m. Sessions are virtual on Google Meet (can be accessed via computer, tablet, or mobile device or dial in by phone).

To sign up for the monthly weight management sessions and weekly Healthy Monday Tip emails, please complete this online form.

For more information about the support groups and OFF program, please contact Monica Smith (monica.smith@nkyhealth.org) or 859-363-2114.

Other Ways to Build a Healthier You

Kick the Habit

Smoking is the single largest preventable cause of disase and premature death in the country. It damages almost every organ in the body. It’s the leading cause of lung cancer. It kills more than 480,000 people in the U.S. each year.

The good news is, we offer a number of resources to help people quit — including confidential programs designed specifically for teens.

Beat Cancer

Cancer stinks. So the Health Department works with the Kentucky Women’s Cancer screening program to make sure that all Kentucky women have access to timely breast and cervical cancer screenings and diagnostic services.

If abnormalities are found during a screening, follow-up care—including additional screenings, biopsies and cancer treatment is available.

Snuff Out the Sniffles

Ah-choo. Cough, cough. Ugh! Every year, Covid, colds, and the flu hit us like a heavyweight champion. Wham! Our noses run, our bodies ache, and we become overwhelmed with a general feeling of blah.

The good news is, there’s help. By combining annual vaccines with some common sense and a few tips, we can get well and stay healthy.
