Free Diabetes Prevention Program

November is National Diabetes Month, an annual event to increase awareness about the risk factors of diabetes.  One in three adults in Kentucky have prediabetes, and many don’t even know it!  Prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis.  It’s a major risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes.

If you think that you might be at risk for diabetes, we have good news for you.  If you currently have NKY Health’s medical insurance (KEHP), the plan covers the entire cost of a variety of diabetes prevention coaching classes, for those who qualify.  Program goals include losing 5 to 7% of body weight and increasing physical activity.  These small changes have been proven to decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%.

Covered programs even include a year of Weight Watchers, now called WW – Wellness that Works.  Other options include programs such as PlateJoy, which is offered virtually and provides you with a personalized coach, digital scale, and the opportunity to earn a free Fitbit activity tracker.  These programs are also available for free to insured family members (18 years or older) on KEHP.

To see if you qualify for these programs, please visit the website below, and click the orange button marked, “Take the 1-Minute Quiz.” At the end of the quiz, you will be told if you qualify for program participation.

Should you have additional program questions after taking the quiz, you can call the Customer Care Center at 1-844-206-3728.  They can review all of the program details with you.

Let’s make 2020 the year for all of us to become healthier!
