The third annual “Dinner Discussion and Diabetes” event on October 18 had 53 attendees — our largest attendance to date! They heard from an expert panel that included an endocrinologist, podiatrist, nurse practitioner and certified diabetes educator/nurse. The program was sponsored by BD (Becton Dickinson) which makes diabetes supplies. Some attendee evaluations noted that they learned  “how to change my diet to lower my A1C,” “there is no one-size fits all for diabetes,” “I need to see an endocrinologist” and “taking care of my gums is important.”

Paula Bergen leads the Supermarket Tour

Supermarket Tours with a focus on diabetes took place at the Meijer in Cold Spring and Florence, Ky. All the participants completed evaluations, with some noting that they learned “whole milk and low fat milk have the same amount of Vitamin D and carbs” and “serving sizes are important.” Meijer generously sponsored the tours and provided reusable shopping bags filled with healthy foods.

NKY Health offers Free Diabetes Support Groups in Boone, Campbell and Kenton Counties.  These are the only diabetes support groups offered in the area. More than 30 people attend support groups each month, and some have been coming for more than 30 years! So we must be doing something right!
