Healthy Monday: Resources for Schools

There are 17 school districts in a four county area in Northern Kentucky. Healthy Monday was implemented in the Covington school district, an urban school district with five elementary, one middle school and one high school. Ninety percent of the students qualify for the free and reduced lunch program. In the fall of 2009, Meatless Monday was introduced to all of the school districts and continued in the 2010 – 2011 school year with menu enhancements.

Two schools, Latonia Elementary and Ninth District Elementary, initiated a more comprehensive approach to Healthy Monday in the 2010 – 2011 school year by adding the Monday Mile and Healthy Monday Messages, which are morning and afternoon announcements. These combined initiatives were evaluated and found to be effective in changing behaviors of students, parents and staff and in changing school environments. Latonia Elementary has 406 students and Ninth District Elementary has 461 students.
